SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT: The project aims to raise awareness about the cancellation of human rights in Belarus since the contested re-election of President Lukashenko in August 2020 and the subsequent socio-political repression perpetrated by the regime. The initiative aims to create critical spaces for reflection, sharing and social awareness through artistic and cultural activities and events of denunciation addressed to young people and adults in Italy, promoting the principles of freedom and social justice.

The project also aims to promote the social and cultural integration of immigrant and refugee people in Italy through orientation, assistance and training activities.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Raising awareness among the local community of young people and adults about the socio-political repression and the resulting erosion of human rights in Belarus through art
  • Promoting values and practices of freedom, social justice and protection of human rights
  • Promoting cultural and social integration of immigrants and refugees through orientation, assistance and training activities

ACTIVITIES:

The project includes the following 5 main phases/activities

  • Artistic exhibition ‘‘La Voce della Speranza” [‘The Voice of Hope’]
  • Screening and debate on the film “Insultati. Bielorussia” [‘Insulted. Belarus’] addressed to high-school students in Rome
  • Theatre performance: “Insultati. Bielorussia” [‘Insulted. Belarus’]
  • Creation of an orientation desk for assistance-related services for immigrants and refugees
  • Training event on Italian language and culture for immigrant and refugee people

RESULTS:

  • Strengthened knowledge and social awareness about the socio-political repression, the dictatorship and the cancellation of human rights in Belarus
  • Promoted critical spaces for reflection, sharing and debate among young people from upper secondary schools in Rome around the themes of freedom and social justice through art
  • Promoted and implemented artistic events and activities – contemporary works of art; film screenings and theatre performances – involving the local community, artists, trade union representatives, politics and the Belarusian diaspora in Italy
  • Implemented integrated programmes of social and cultural inclusion through orientation-assistance desks and Italian language and culture courses
