FIELD OF INTERVENTION: Education, Healthcare, Socio-economic Development, Capacity Building, Professional Training
GEOGRAPHICAL AREA: MENA (Middle East & North Africa), Egypt, Abu Zaabal – Qalyubia Governorate
SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT: The project aims at improving living and health conditions for the population of Abu Zaabal, an extremely poor village with a very high rate of persons suffering from leprosy, with a particular focus on women and children.
The project consists of training activities regarding two different sectors: one training module for woodworking and one module on health education for women and teachers coming from the village next to the leprosarium.
Professional training is focused on woodworkers for two reasons: first of all, in the leprosarium, it already exists a laboratory intended for carpentry, which is not being used because of the lack of skilled labor force; furthermore, once the beneficiaries have gained the necessary skills, they will be able to renovate and partly build some areas of the leprosarium and possibly extend their activity to the village.
OBJECTIVES: ● Improve living and health conditions for women and children belonging to the families of persons suffering from leprosy. ● Develop professional skills to improve the structural conditions of the leprosarium. ● Promote literacy and basic education for children, supporting school attendance among girls. ● Provide basic professional training, with a particular focus on information technology and English language for women. ● Raise awareness and transfer good practices on sustainable development. ● Improve health education through information dissemination on basic hygiene and sanitation principles.
ACTIVITIES:
- Professional training for woodworkers.
- Basic education on hygiene and sanitation for women and teachers.
- Assistance to the personnel of the leprosarium and provision of equipment to improve the building.
RESULTS:
- Men professionally trained in woodworking.
- Structural improvement of the leprosarium and provision of material and equipment, completed.
- Women and teachers provided with basic knowledge of hygiene and sanitation, which they will disseminate to families and children.
