Reconstruction of the Enam Professional Center in Port-au-Prince

COUNTRY: Haiti

FIELD OF INTERVENTION: Humanitarian Aid, Emergency

SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT:
In the economic and employment context of Latin American countries, where unemployment and/or employment in the informal sector have a significant impact, Haiti is dealing with one of the most problematic situations. In this Caribbean state the majority of the labor force is indeed employed in the informal sector, reaching peaks of 90%, while approximately 80% of the population is living in poverty. The few regular employment opportunities are offered by the public sector, which only involves 2% of active population. This situation which, obviously, create a serious impediment on the path towards national development, has worsened following the earthquake that hit the country in January 2010 and that, in addition to a further decrease in employment rates, has also resulted in a continuing degradation of environmental, hygiene and health conditions.
It is in this general context that we find the implementation of the project for the construction of a school building at the ENAM institute (École Nationale des Arts et Métiers) in Port-au-Prince, managed by the Salesians of Haiti, which was severely damaged by the earthquake and that represents one of the few institutes able to provide valid and efficient professional training.

OBJECTIVES: The construction of the school building responds to the priority need for properly carrying out professional training, since the earthquake completely destroyed a similar a building, obliging the institute to adopt temporary solutions which are not appropriate to ensure the proper implementation of its activities.

ACTIVITIES: Construction of a school building consisting of 14 classrooms, administrative offices and services, with the removal of architectural barriers.

RESULTS: School building constructed and resumption of professional training activities carried out by the school.
